How’d the Show Go? SOJA, Anuhea and Gentlemen & The Evolution

SOJA at House of Blues San Diego w/ Anuhea and Gentlemen & The Evolution

So, I have been pumped up waiting for the sold out SOJA show that took place last night at HOB in San Diego and I was not let down! We arrived early and took a spot close to the stage just in time to see the opener Anuhea, from Hawaii. We had the opportunity to see her live once before when she played at Winston’s with The Green. Her set last night was outstanding! It seems so nerve racking to be on stage with just a guitar and a voice, but Anuhea does it with the grace and style that is usually reserved for veterans that have been playing for decades. Her songs were beautiful, and her heart and soul were apparent throughout her performance. She ended her set with an amazing cover of Bob Marley’s Redemption Song that got the crowd hyped for the next band. Check her out online:

On stage next was Gentlemen & The Evolution, from Germany. I had not yet heard of this band, but was really impressed by their deep roots sound and dancehall rhythms. Their new album is titled “Diversity Live”, and that word really describes their sound and stage presence, diverse. From horn blasting, crowd pumping, almost ska like songs to the slower, roots heavy tracks…I was really impressed to see a band I had never heard of kill the stage and warm everyone up for the main attraction of the night. Next up it was time for some SOJA! They hit the stage with the anticipation of the crowd gaining by the minute. At this point, our close to the stage spot was literally being taken over by the fans, so we snuck over to a back wall where we could actually breathe. SOJA came out swinging with a few well-known tracks, including “Rest of My Life”, which is one of my personal favorites. Every time Jacob Hemphill backed away from the mic, the crowd took over, filling in the lyrics in thunderous voices. The bobbing motion of the crowd was amazing, and everyone in the house was moving to the melody put forth by this ridiculously talented band. Musically these guys are on point; with heavy riffs, horns and a positive message in their lyrics, it is no wonder they have a global fan base the size that they do. Their new album Strength to Survive is on heavy rotation here at the NUG headquarters and I recommend checking this band out to literally everyone I know that asks me to turn them on to some new bands. You can check them out tonight on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno! Also, log on to their website to learn more:
