JOEY’S HOPE at The California Aquatic Therapy & Wellness Center

The Unconventional Foundation for Autism is proud to host JOEY’S HOPE at The California Aquatic Therapy & Wellness Center in Long Beach on September 17, 2011 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

In 2009, Mieko decided to go public with her son’s success with medical cannabis and was invited on FOX News, The Doctors Show, NBC, CBS, The Good Morning America’s Today’s show and ABC’s 20/20 . Recently her story aired internationally on Australia’s number one morning show and in the United Kingdom. Mieko has become a source of inspiration for other mothers and families lending her voice for unconventional and holistic treatments within the autism spectrum.

With more than 1 in 110 children being affected by autism, it has become the fastest growing serious developmental disability in the United States. Currently, there is no medical detection or cure for autism; however, there are pharmaceutical and therapeutic treatments that have proven to be effective in improving the condition.

The Unconventional Foundation for Autism has partnered with The California Aquatic Therapy & Wellness Center in Long Beach to allow families and children experience warm water therapy. Aquatic Therapy can promote wellness and improve the quality of life for individuals with health needs in an accessible, warm-water aquatic facility. California Aquatic Therapy and Wellness Center, Inc. history began in 1956 with the support of the community, a dedicated civic leader (Evelyn duPont) and a small backyard pool. Ms. duPont had developed polio as an adult and was rehabilitating through aquatic therapy. Her rehabilitation inspired her to open her pool to provide free swim lessons to children with disabilities. The not for profit corporation later became the California Pools for the Handicapped and in 1996, the California Pools of Hope, Inc., and in 2009 the California Aquatic Therapy and Wellness Center, Inc.

The California Aquatic Therapy & Wellness Center is known as the premier provider of aquatic exercise and physical therapy programs for people with disabilities. Normal exercise venues or activities are often not welcoming options for the physically, or mentally, disabled. The California Pools of Hope Inc. facility is equipped with accessible ramps and lifts for those who are wheelchair bound or have limited mobility. The California Aquatic Therapy & Wellness Center also provide water wheelchairs for easy access to therapy. Water exercise, in particular, encompasses all the components of fitness: cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance and flexibility. When done regularly, water exercise can help reduce body fat and is extremely beneficial in the prevention and treatment of heart disease, strokes and orthopedic conditions. It improves circulation, strengthens muscles, reduce pain and enables participants to gain maximum benefits from exercise while substantially reducing risk of injury.
