Irish singer Lisa Hannigan follows her acclaimed debut Sea Sew with Passenger, out September 20 on ATO Records. Hannigan’s first solo outing garnered critical praise from NPR’s “All Things Considered,†who hailed her voice as “ethereal,†The Los Angeles Times, which described the album as “charmingly idiosyncratic,†and People Magazine, which called the debut record “dreamy.†Hannigan, who received a 2009 Mercury Prize nomination for the album, also performed on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno†and “The Colbert Report.†She will support the new release with a North American tour this fall. Please see reverse for full tour schedule.
Hannigan leads a group of friends through ten songs on Passenger, recorded over a week at Brynderwyn Studios in North Wales by Grammy-winning producer Joe Henry (Solomon Burke, Allen Toussaint, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot) and engineer Ryan Freeland (Ray LaMontagne). Much of Passenger reflects Hannigan’s journey, particularly whilst touring her first record. She explains, “Many of [the songs] were written while I was away from home or on the road, and the feeling of transience and nostalgia that this constant traveling evoked seemed to seep into every song.†The overarching theme of the record, then, is “those loves, heartbreaks, confusions and friendships that we take with us through life, over years and continents, enduring the passage of time.â€
In addition to her solo work Hannigan sang with Damien Rice for seven years, touring the world and playing sell-out shows at Radio City Music Hall and the Greek Theatre. She contributed significantly to Rice’s platinum-selling debut O and critically lauded follow-up 9. She also sang with the legendary Herbie Hancock on a rendition of Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’†for his Imagine Project alongside the Chieftains and Toumani Diabaté.
