How’d The Show Go?

The Melodramatics from Redding, California came all the way down to San Diego and played at Gallagher’s in Ocean Beach. This four-piece band was entertaining as well as diverse. With a mohawk singer/guitar player, a trombone/keyboard player, a drummer with a checkered snare, and a North Cali’ beach-retro bassist, I couldn’t help but be amused just by the appearance of this reggae/rock band. Their original songs were great and memorable, with songs like “Playing It Cool,†which brought the punk/rock out. Another song, “Under the Influence,†was a skanking rock. They played other original songs, but I didn’t have a chance to get a set-list. They also played amazing covers too, such as Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer,†Eve 6’s “Inside Out,†and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “You Don’t Know How it Feels.â€
The band played three sets the entire night of Thursday, May 12th at Gallagher’s where they have a reggae band every week. All guys displayed good show performance, but I really liked how the drummer concentrated on his drum-playing; especially during the punk/rock songs. Shirts and CDs were set up next to the stage, and I was really impressed to see four albums out. Overall, The Melodramatics is a great punk/rock band with nice skanking effects!
