Cannabis Use Associated with Reduced Alcohol Intake Among Treatment-Seeking Drinkers

Research on the medical benefits of cannabis has been delayed in the United States, but with the ongoing legalization of marijuana, more empirical evidence is being shared by the medical community with the general public. And according to the findings published in this week’s edition of the journal Addiction, Research shows Cannabis use is associated with reduced alcohol consumption in individuals looking for alcohol treatment.

According to the CDC, “In the United States, excessive alcohol consumption causes about 95,000 deaths annually. Deaths from excessive drinking are 1 in 10 of the total deaths of production-age adults between the ages of 20 and 64. Occupies people. ”Medical professionals have sought to use Cannabis in alcohol-related medical problemsAnd by investigating the use of medical marijuana, we have discovered many potential health benefits.

The data was collected by a team of researchers at the University of Colorado at Boulder and Colorado State University and published in a peer-reviewed journal published since 1884. Addiction Study Group.. Individuals were recruited from 2016 to 2020 from the Denver and Boulder community and university settings and became 96 cannabis-using subjects studied in these analyses.

The researchers said: “Overall samples, individuals drink about 29% less drinks, 2.06 times less likely to have drinking episodes on cannabis-using days than on cannabis-free days. Patterns were observed in men, women, and rare and frequent cannabis-using groups. “

Data from the study showed that subjects’ alcohol intake was dramatically reduced when they reported using cannabis. This trend was consistent not only among those who used large amounts of cannabis, but also among those who occasionally used small amounts of cannabis. Similarly, trends in state data have demonstrated a decline in alcohol sales in areas where marijuana legalization efforts have passed.

While current research is promising, it is imperative that US medicine begin to expand the potential for cannabis-related health benefits. Stay tuned for the latest news navigating 2021 and the ever-changing political landscape associated with advances in medical marijuana.
