Massachusetts Regulators Flag Thirteen Percent Of Flower For THC Label Inaccuracy

Regulators Identify Labeling Errors

The Cannabis Control Commission in Massachusetts released the results of a recent audit on flower potency. The review examined 63 flower products from 62 different producers. These items were pulled from retail and medical dispensaries across the state.

Regulators established that an accurate label must fall within 75% to 125% of the stated potency. The audit found that 13 samples fell outside of this acceptable range. This represents about 13% of the tested products in the study.

The findings highlight significant inconsistencies in current labeling practices.

Required Actions For Noncompliant Producers

Producers of the 13 noncompliant products must take specific follow-up actions. Options include recalling and repurposing the product with new testing. They may also recall and relabel the product with the audit result.

Other required actions include retesting the inventory or destroying the product entirely. The noncompliant products have been placed on administrative holds. This measure prevents further sales of the affected items in the market.

Dispensaries have the option to remove or destroy the affected products immediately. The hold remains in effect until the producers complete their required actions.

Officials Cite Safety And Future Goals

CCC Executive Director Travis Ahern stated that the audit represents the continuing work of our internal testing task force. He noted the group was created to focus on testing issues as part of our mission to oversee a safe, equitable cannabis marketplace. Ahern made these remarks in a press release.

Ahern added that the audit will help us calibrate future audits as we move toward random testing for contaminants of concern. These contaminants include pesticides, heavy metals, yeast and mold, and bacteria. This statement was also provided in the official press release.

CCC Chair Chris Harding emphasized that accurate product labeling is a matter of health and safety for medical marijuana patients who rely on potency for accurate dosing. Harding said this audit represents a step forward in our efforts to enhance our oversight to maintain trust in the adult-use and medical marijuana markets.
