Pharma Executive To Push For Unified European Standards On Medical Cannabis At Frankfurt And London Conferences

A Push For One European Standard

Ana Serrato, Head of Drug Development at Avextra and chair of the European Medicinal Cannabis Association, will speak at medical cannabis conferences in Frankfurt and London this autumn. She will appear at both Cannabis Health Symposiums to discuss efforts to create common standards for cannabis-based medicines across Europe.

Serrato also chairs an international standards group focused on the quality, safety and use of cannabis-based medicines. The group sits within ASTM International’s cannabis committee and is known as the Human Health Subcommittee, D37.11.

Ahead of the November events, Serrato said: “Trusted cannabinoid-based care will not come from national regulation alone it requires one shared standard, built for the full journey from product to patient.”

Her argument is that individual national rules are not enough to deliver consistent, trusted cannabinoid-based care. Instead, she believes a single shared standard covering the full journey from product to patient is needed.

What She Will Discuss At Each Event

At the Frankfurt symposium on 4 November, Serrato will take part in a panel examining whether Europe needs a common pharmaceutical quality framework for medical cannabis.

She will explain that harmonisation could give manufacturers “one consistent technical reference”.

Healthcare professionals would gain “reliable evidence to guide prescribing”, according to her London presentation.

Patients would receive “assurance of quality and safety”, while regulators would get “a harmonised benchmark”.

Event Details And Next Steps

The Cannabis Health Symposium Frankfurt takes place on 4 November, followed by the London symposium on 26 November.

Both events will bring together healthcare professionals, researchers, patient advocates and industry figures to discuss the latest developments in medical cannabis research, prescribing, regulation and patient care.

The symposiums offer evidence-led education for clinicians, industry and patient advocates. Tickets include 12 months’ free MCCS membership.

Attendees can secure places at either the Frankfurt or London Cannabis Health Symposium.

The events represent the next step in ongoing efforts to build common European standards for cannabis-based medicines.
