A new survey has found that most people who consume marijuana plan to weigh candidates’ stances on cannabis policy when they vote in the November elections. The poll was conducted by the cannabis telehealth platform NuggMD on behalf of NORML.
Nearly eight in 10 marijuana consumers said their decision at the ballot box will be “significantly” or “somewhat” influenced by candidates’ views on cannabis policy. The survey involved interviews with 654 cannabis consumers who live in states with legal markets and has a margin of error of +/-3.83 percentage points.
The survey found that support for considering cannabis policy crosses party lines. The advocacy group reported that 83 percent of Democrats and 73 percent of Republicans said candidates’ marijuana policy stances will influence how they vote.
Gender breakdowns showed similar patterns.
NORML Deputy Director Paul Armentano said the results show reform has broad backing among voters. “Reforming America’s failed marijuana prohibition laws enjoys bipartisan support among voters,” Armentano said. “Candidates and elected officials who ignore this reality do so at their own political peril.”
The survey was released as voters prepare to head to the polls in the November elections.
The results indicate that marijuana consumers are not a single-party constituency. Majorities of Democrats, Republicans, men and women all reported that cannabis stances will factor into their votes.
The poll stands as a snapshot of consumer attitudes ahead of the November elections, with majorities across party and gender lines saying candidates’ positions on cannabis policy will influence their decisions at the ballot box.
