Retailers Must Differentiate Holiday Strategies To Maximize Cannabis Sales

Gold Standard Data Reveals Holiday Missteps

Gold Standard, a marketing firm managing licensed cannabis retailers, released new point-of-sale data challenging common holiday strategies. The company tracks real sales order by order through its attribution platform across several states. This analysis focuses on specific performance metrics from New York stores during recent holiday periods.

The data indicates that treating all holidays and store locations identically is a significant operational error. Retailers often apply the same deals, hours, and staffing regardless of the specific date or neighborhood. Gold Standard argues that this uniform approach ignores distinct consumer behaviors tied to specific holidays and demographics.

The firm’s findings are based on actual transaction records rather than third-party estimates or survey data. This direct access to point-of-sale systems allows for precise tracking of revenue fluctuations. The results highlight a clear disconnect between promotional timing and actual customer purchasing patterns.

Queens and Brooklyn Sales Patterns

A neighborhood shop in Queens ran a “Buy 3 Get 1 Free” promotion throughout the July 4th holiday period. Despite the aggressive deal, sales dropped 23% below a normal Saturday on the holiday itself. The store gave away free product while experiencing one of its worst days of the week.

Revenue for that same promotion actually increased by 45% on the Tuesday before the holiday. The Thursday before the long weekend became the single biggest day of the promotional run. Customers stocked up midweek and then left for barbecues on the holiday itself.

A Brooklyn shop running a scaled “buy more, save more” deal observed an identical sales curve. Sales peaked three days before the holiday and then fell below average on the day itself. Two different stores with different offers demonstrated that the promotion does not move the date, but the customer does.

Location Specific Demographic Shifts

Memorial Day proved to be one of the strongest days of the month for the Queens and Brooklyn neighborhood stores. Residents were home, relaxed, and willing to make a run to the shop. This holiday boosted sales in residential areas where people typically stay home.

In contrast, a store in Midtown Manhattan saw sales cut in half, down 50%, on that same Memorial Day. Midtown’s customer base consists primarily of office workers and tourists who are absent on holidays. The holiday that boosted neighborhood shops crushed the commuter-focused location.

The week leading up to Memorial Day saw Midtown sales rise by double digits. However, the holiday itself caused the store’s performance to flatline completely. Gold Standard notes that this behavior is consistent across every state they operate in, not just New York.
