Study: Cannabis Compound Inhibits SARS-CoV-2 Replication in Human Lung Cells

In a study conducted in the United States, researchers found that compounds in cannabis could prevent the progression of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in human lung cells. Did.

Researchers at the University of Chicago Medical Center, Marsha Rosner and colleagues, found that cannabidiol (CBD) and its metabolite, 7-OH-CBD, slow or block the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in lung epithelial cells. I found that. SARS-CoV-2 is the primary agent found in the COVID-19 variant of SARS-COVID.

In their study, researchers found that the use of CBD was significantly correlated with reduced spread of SARS-CoV-2.

How was this study done?

To determine how CBD affects SARS-CoV-2, researchers pretreated A549-ACE2 lung cells with up to 10 µM (micrometers) of CBD. Two hours later, they infected these cells with SARS-CoV-2. Forty-eight hours after infection, researchers analyzed how much SARS-CoV-2 spread to these cells and whether CBD countered the spread.

At the same time as testing CBD with SARS-CoV-2, researchers pretreated some of the lung cells with other cannabinoids to determine the effectiveness of these different cannabinoids in the fight against SARS-CoV-2. did.

Among the cells pretreated with CBD, the diffusion and replication of SARS-CoV-2 cells was markedly arrested, if not diminished. Other cannabinoids tested in this study have been found to be less effective in slowing the spread of the disease.

Of the cannabinoids tested, CBD has been shown to be the most potent against the spread of SARS-CoV-2. In addition, 7-OH-CBD, the active ingredient in CBD treatment used for epilepsy, has been shown to interfere with the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in A549-ACE2 cells.

CBD not only prevented the spread of SARS-CoV-2, but also eliminated RNA expression of coronavirus agents. Not only did SARS-CoV-2 stop spreading in CBD-treated A549-ACE2 cells, but CBD also stopped RNA encoding the viral peplomer, allowing the virus to invade vulnerable cells. I made it.

Decreased SARS-COV-2 infection rate and CBD intake

Researchers at the University of Chicago also compared the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 in patients who did not receive the same prescription as those who were prescribed CBD.

Of the two groups, patients who were prescribed CBD had a SARS-CoV-2 incidence of 1.2%, while those who were not prescribed CBD had an incidence of 12%.
